Church planter, covocational minister, missional leadership coach. None of these phrases were in my vocabulary, nor were they identities I could have ever imagined having, nor even wanting when I was younger. Instead, growing up, I was known as a bully, a class clown, and a privileged kid from a well-off family who never really had much to worry about. As most kids are, I was lost and confused, doing whatever it was that I wanted, which led to a lot of guilt and shame I didn’t know how to deal with. On top of that, I felt like life was very purposeless because I had experienced what the riches of this would could get you and though they were nice, they were not fulfilling and I was therefore unwilling to work my whole life for something ultimately meaningless.
However, God had a greater vision for my life and it was in college that He sent people into my life to share the gospel with me, which was something I had never heard of, having never stepped foot in church. Hearing that there actually was an answer to all of the guilt and shame I carried around, as well as a God out there who knew everything about me and yet still loved me so much that He would sacrifice His own Son to save someone like me and that I did not need to do a thing to earn my salvation except confess my sins, believe in what Jesus did for me on the cross and trustingly follow Him as my Lord, sounded way too good to be true. Yet, as I continued to go to church and Bible studies as well as be presented evidence for Christianity, I was overwhelmed by both the intellectual arguments as well how relevant and true to life the Bible is. What was even more convincing though, was the lives of the mentors that had left behind friends, family, jobs and homes in the San Francisco Bay Area to move to the desert of UC Riverside to plant the church there that I was saved into. I saw that these were Christians who did not merely go to church, hear the Word preached, sing praise songs and then go on with their daily lives, but actually took the Word of God seriously and made sacrifices to live it out, trusting in God’s wisdom and plan for their lives.
And it was because of these two things, God’s saving work in my life and the examples I had of what following Jesus in all aspects of life really looked like, that helped me see that God has saved us and called us to a holy calling and has given us all a purpose that is higher than anything worth living for here on this earth. Since being saved, I have been on fire to share the gospel with others, in faith that there are many others out there like me who, if they could just hear and receive God's invitation, they would respond with joy and surrender. However, if it was not for the structure, culture, and people in the church that I got saved into, I would have become a lone-ranger Christian, running hard but eventually burning out. Instead, along with my precious brothers and sisters in Christ whom I have years of relational history with and whom I draw so much strength from, I have been able to help start and plant churches in both the West and the East Coast, where I currently serve as a Covocational Campus Minister in NJ. I am very thankful God gave us the church, because if I did not have this support system as well as lifelong friends to go through the ups and down of life with and to do ministry alongside, though not impossible, the sacrificial life Jesus exemplified for us and calls us to would be near impossible.
With this in mind, because the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few, I started Coach With Yim with the vision to help church leaders equip their whole congregation for ministry. I did not get to where I was alone and my desire is to share the resources and wisdom I’ve received to open up opportunities for others to partake in the ministry that God calls all Christians to colabor with Him in. We all have our struggles and barriers to living as ministers and my goal as a Missional Leadership Coach is to help people identify and overcome theirs so that they can share in both the joys and sorrows of God’s heart. No matter what stage of life you are in or what you are going through, if you are a Christian, God is calls you to daily live as a minister. It's possible, I've seen it, and I've been a recipient of it at Acts2 Network.
